William Gibbs McAdoo

I have been researching my Gibbs family and have hit a brick wall with William Gibbs who married Elizabeth Loring in Boston in 1774. This family is later found in New York with parts of it staying in NY and others migrating to MI and WI. I had a male Gibbs relative whose male lineage is unbroken to our earliest known ancestor participate in the Gibbs Surname DNA project. Results seem to show that we can eliminate the Gibbs line that comes from New England and do further resaecrh of those lines found in VA and NC. Today, I received an e-mail from the Gibbs participant wondering if I had ever heard of William Gibbs McAdoo, saying (his) father used to say we were related to him. Needless to say, I just did a quick search of the internet looking at every reference I could find for this family. Does anyone have any information for what was the significance and where did the name originate for the Gibbs middle name? Was there a Gibbs ancestor somewhere along the line? Does anyone have any information for the Gibbs part of this family? Thank you.
