Hi Fiona,
Very interesting reply.I have a sister Margaret and an aunt Margaret McAdams (deceased).
Sounds like there may be a connection somewhere. Can you put rough dates on the names that you listed? For the Francis that went to USA and then returned to Ireland, do you have any idea where in USA he lived, and when, how long he was there, and whether he went to live with relatives there? Was he the first-born, and did he go back to claim some land?A family story says that Owen used to say that there was some land in Ireland that would be his if he went back.Maybe he was the first-born of his family.
We're trying to figure out why great-grandfather Owen happened to come to Cleveland. He married a Mary McCue in Cleveland the year after we first have a record of him being there, but I don't know if he went there because he knew them, or just met them there.
We don't have direct evidence that his parents were Edward McAdam and Susan Lenan of Clerran Townland, Clontibret, Co. Monaghan (part of Castleshane, I think). The link is based on a record of Alice McAdam, who family history says was Owen's sister. She was an Ursuline nun in Cleveland and was called "aunt Alice" by my Grandfather. The forms she filled out when she entered the order listed her place of birth and her parents, Edward and Susan. We haven't found a record of her birth in Ireland yet, but we have some IGI records that Edward and Susan had other children; Catherine, Edward, and maybe a Patrick. And we don't know when and how she travelled to Cleveland.
I noticed your email address was from Ireland.Do you live there?Near Monaghan? My sister Maureen and brother Terrence visited Ireland for the first time last summer. They traveled all over, mostly the South-West I think, but they spent a couple days in Clontibret, checked some church records, and visited an area in Clerran where some McAdam had lived. They even met a Margaret McAdam that worked in a hospital in Monaghan town, altough McAdam was her husbands name.I think she might have been from Clones area.
By the way, it was lucky that I was notified of your reply.I've since changed my email address, but I am still having email forwarded from that ols address temporarily until I am confident that no one is sending me email at that address anymore.
Thanks again,
Tim
