The name Mazza is of a number of possible origins. Firstly, it may be of occupational origin, being derived from the Italian word "mazza" which means "a club, cudgel, bludgeon, sledge-hammer, mallet, mace, gavel, or staff of office". Thus, it is possible that our far ancestors were makers or inventors of the objects. Alternatively, the name Mazza may be a shortened form of the names Mazzacane (dog killer), Mazzagalli ( killer of roosters), Mazzapica, Mazzalova, and Mazzamici. A number of Mazza were of noble origin, and some of them served King Giacomo D'Aragona in 1287. It is possible that a Mazza came to North America in 1492 with Christopher Columbus. Francesco Mazza was mayor of Reggio Emilia in 1613. Presently, there are over 25 scientists world-wide bearing the name Mazza. There is major disease named the Chagas-Mazza disease. Comments welcome.
