Hi. I'm not related to this family. There are some newspaper articles about the murder:
The Landmark (Statesville, NC)- Tues, 28 Jun 1898 - "The horrible news was received in this city Monday of a shooting murder and robbery near Kapp's mill, Surrey county, Saturday night, June 18.The charred remains of Mrs. Martha Higgins were found in the ashes after the flames had consumed her dwelling. It is known that the lady, who was quite old, had at least $1,200, and it is almost certain that the greater part of this was on her premises. The crime was committed in order to secure this money and the body cremated with the hope that fire would forever cover up the deed. At this writing no clue has been discovered as to who the murderer or murderers are."
The Semi-Weekly Landmark (Statesville, NC), Tues, 12 Jul 1898 - "John Jack Mays, the white man who stands charged with murdering and robbing and then burning the home of Mrs. Martha Higgins, an old woman near Kapp's Mills, Surry county, has been taken to Winston jail for safe keeping."
The Journal (Winston-Salem, NC) - Mon 3 Oct 1898 - "Mays Carried Back to Surrey - Deputy Sheriff Hunley, of Surrey county arrived in the city Saturday night. He came after John Jack Mays, who is wanted in Surry for the murder of an aged lady, and who was brought to this city for safe keeping July 1st.He carried Mays to Dobson yesterday by private conveyance, and his trial will come up in Surry Superior court this week."
That's all I could find.Hope this helps.Annie
