A Gardner Mays & A William Mays
Does anyone know to which Mays family the following belong?
1:
In "Roster of Soldiers from NC in the American Revolution", Gardner "May" enlisted (for 36 months) in Heron's Company, as a Musketeer, and Private on May 22, 1777.November of 1778 he was promoted to Corporal, and on 1 June 1779 he taken prisoner, (page 143).
After his discharge Gardner "Maye" was granted (#1324) 482 acres of land, which was apparently deeded to W. Williams. (?)(page 260).
*Also appears in this book as Gardner "Moy".
In "NC Land Grants in TN 1778-1791."
Under Andrew BREAKEY:
…"Breakey, Andrew;
III 288, no warrant or survey, assigned by John Smith, Pvt.
III 289, assigned by Gardner Maye, Corp., (Later to James Glasgow)."
III 290, no warrant or survey, assigned by Joab Ballard, Soldier.
III 291, no warrant or survey, assigned by Jesse Cherry, heir of John Cherry, Soldier.
...etc.
**Section III deals with grants based on Military Warrants for Rev. service.
He evidently sold his warrant (though I can't tell exactly to whom), and I assume likely never lived in NC or present-day TN.Though I am aware of one (possibly one of the Pittsylvania gang?) who later moved to Middle or Western TN, Williamson Co., TN I believe.

I have wondered about it for several years and since I came across it again while browsing through some old notes, I thought I'd also ask if the following have been placed into any one of the many Mays lines.Captain William Mayes of the Powhattan Military(oath Aug. 21, 1777) was, as well as Lieutenant William Mayes, (Powhattan Military, rec. June 20, 1781)Historical Reg. of Virginians in the Rev., Gwathmey.I assume that the dates suggest different people (?) or a de-motion (?).
Trying to keep the Gardner's and William's all straightened out.
Thanks,
John
