That rings true with what I have also heard. There were Mayottes in Union, Oregon when I was growing up in the '50s-60s--but they had been there longer. One of my Great Grandparents was a Mayotte. Contact I believe she has some information. I was always told that we were "French Canadian--which translated to part-Indian". I heard the same stories about trappers. My other family names that are relavent to that side of the family are Burford and Ross and Rundell (I think). Try contacting Margaret.
