Thank-you form your prompt reply.
My gt.grandfather, James Tonge, appears in the 1871 Census as:
Age 55. Widower, living at 6, Byrom street, Bolton. And is described as 'stepfather' of Emma Mayoh (32) & Robert Mayoh (4).
Clearly there is an error. It has been suggested to me that James married Emma but I have not yet found a record of a wedding.
James appears to be still alive in 1877 when my grandfather, also James, marries my grandmother, Ellen Morris.
What do you make of this?
