Merrick* has shown that John Mayo's true parentage can be ascertained from an Oyster Bay deed.On 5 March 1701/1702, “Joseph Mayo of Newbury in the County of Essex in the province of Massachusetts Bay in New England, eldest son and heir of Samuel Mayo of Eastham in the County of Barnstable in the province aforesaid, Deceased ... appoint my trusty and well Beloved Brother John Mayo of Hing[h]am in County of Suffolk and Edmund Freeman of Eastham in the County of Barnstable in the province aforesaid Joyntly and Severally to be my true and Lawful attorney and attorneys....”His gravestone inscription further identifies him as son of Capt. Samuel and grandson of Ralph Mayo.
The Freeman Genealogy (1875) gives his birth date and place as 19 December 1652 in Hingham, Massachusetts and his father as Reverend John Mayo, but according to Merrick, this refers to a different John Mayo, not the husband of Hannah Freeman.Merrick does place John Mayo, the husband of Hannah Freeman, as a resident of Hingham for many years.
His will, dated 3 February 1723/1724 and proved 15 February 1725/1726 left bequests to his wife Hannah; sons Samuel, John, Joseph; and daughters Hannah Hopkins, Mercy Hopkins, Rebecca Paine, Mary Hopkins, and Elizabeth Mayo.
