Hi Cousin Sinclair!
Samuel m. Nancy Millar
They had nine children:
Annie b. 14 Aug 1875 d. 27 Jan 1968
James b. 21 Aug 1877
Matilda b. 24 Aug 1879.Died the same day.
Sarah b. 04 Jan 1882 d. 1982 (in Cookstown NI?)
Margaret (Maggie) b. 16 May 1884.M. Fred Holland, lived at Gortacar, Co Tyrone NI.
Robert (Bob) b. 25 Sep 1886
Jack (John) b. 01 Jan 1889
Matilda (Tilly) b. 18 Feb 1893
Elizabeth (Cissie) b. 08 Jan 1897
William b. 20 Aug 1895 kia 11 Mar 1918, Flanders
Samuel and Nancy's gravestone in Sandholes churchyard records the following:
Nancy Mayne d 17/01/1904
Her husband, Samuel d 17/01/1918
Their son, William (in mem) d 21/03/1918, kia
2 children died in infancy
Their son, Robert d 10/02/1971
His wife Jean Isobel d 15/10/1984
James emigrated to Australia, then to New York City, USA.
Sarah emigrated, aged 20, to Jersey City, USA.Married Adam Forsythe there.
I have been told that Robert married Martha Milligan, but Samuel's gravestone records Jean Isobel as Robert's wife. They had one child - Ivan d. 1925, presumably your father, which makes you Colin Sinclair Mayne, brother to Wilbert, Trevor, Raymond and Christine?
Tilly married William McIveor. She died 09 Sep 1890.Her grave is in Desertcreat churchyard, Co Tyrone, NI - I have visited it!
Cissie married Alexander Bell. They emigrated to Canada and spent most of their life in Vancouver, BC.
I am fascinated to hear of an autobiography of Rev James - can you tell me the ISBN?
As to your question, Robert b. 1828 married Catherinre Henry of Pomeroy in 1847.That is the earliest I can prove.I was told by my father that Robert was the son of Isaac (or John).Isaac was the son of Rev Thomas b. 1727, who came to Drumgooland NI from Ayshire, Scotland in 1749.He died in Rathfriland (dreadful place!) in 1806.These people certainly existed, but I cannot prove the links to Robert.I have been in touch with one Matthew Kelly who is a desceendant of these people, but his records do not include Robert b.1828.One day I shall get there!I am beginning to plan a return trip to NI, perhaps in 2009, to try to determine all this.I would be delighted to share what I have and work with you if you are interested.
Incidentally, you say that "descendants of the original Robert Mayne are mainly in USA and Canada with some in New Zealand", but there are many descendants still in NI (familes named McCord, McIvor, Holland and Mayne. My own line left NI with my grandfather in the early 20th century and all his descendants live in England and Wales, except for my brother who has retired to southern France.
GenForum has hidden your email address. If you would like to correspond, please send it to me.I can then send you a picture of Samuel and Nancy's gravestone.
I look forward to hearing from you: I am so pleased you got in touch.
Nick Mayne, Somerset, England
