William Maynard Civil War records

William Maynard, son of Rev. William and Sarah Kemp Maynard and brother to James Maynard who died on a hospital ship on the Mississippi River during the Civil War, was born in Horsmonden, Kent, England, 1831. He married Martha Clout, daughter of Richard and Mary Campaney Clout.
He served in the American Civil War. The following are the extractions of his pension records and placed in my notes.

William Maynard enlisted in Lawrenceburg, IN in Co. H, 83rd IN Volunteers, Infantry, where his brother, James, also enlisted. William had stomach problems but no wound. His brother James died of "typhoid fever" on the hospital ship "Memphis" on the Mississippi River between Vicksburg and the Louisiana river banks. He was buried in Vicksburg National Cemetery, but no site has been found. His name was not entered into the computer data banks at Vicksburg. (1999)

National Archives, Declaration for the Increase of An Invalid Pension, 24 June 1887. 59 year old William, a resident of New Point, was receiving $8 a month.

National Archives, Declaration for Increase of An Invalid Pension, 12 Jan. 1887. Description, 5 foot 6 and 3/4 inches tall, 148 pounds, age 58. Pulse rate 84, respiration, 22, temperature, 99.

National Archives, Declaration for Increase, Medical evaluation and history. Treated at hospital in Memphis, Tennessee 3 weeks in Dec. 1862. On Jan. 8, 1863 he was treated at Keokuk, IA.

National Archives, Increase Invalid Pension, 12 Jan. 1887, New Point, Decatur Co., IN, Co. H., 83 IN Vol. Infantry. Discharged 2 June 1985. Chronic diarrhea and disease of the rectum, with rheumatism, as well.

National Archives, Medical Statement 7 Aug. 1887, New Point, IN. Assessed 1/2 for diarrhea and 1/2 for rheumatism and 0 for disease of the kidneys.

National Archives, statements by Peter Engel of New Point, IN and John Gunter of Napoleon, IN, who attested they knew William Maynard to have been a soldier. 27 March 1888.

National Archives, Increase in Invalid Pension, 15 Dec. 1888. Filed from New Point, Decatur Co., IN. Certificate number 341,043 attached.

National Archives, Increase Invalid Pension, #341,043, medical examination. Frances M. Sherwood and Benjamin Ketchum witnessed his signature.

National Archives, Declaration for Invalid Pension, 12 Mar. 1883. Age 55, 5 feet 7 inches tall. Stated he was enrolled in 1862 in Company H, 83rd IN regiment, Col. Benj. Spooner commander, and was discharged Washington, DC, 2 June 1865.

National Archives, Board of Review, 5 Oct. 1886, justified pension.

National Archives, Declaration for Increase of an Invalid Pension. 12 Mar. 1889, New Point, Decatur Co., IN. Currently paid $12. Increase rejected.

National Archives, Medical statement and evaluation, Excello, OH. Physical description, 5 foot 7 inches tall, weight 145 pounds, at age 61. Pulse, respiration, and temperature were normal.

National Archives, Medical statement and evaluation, Excello, OH. Physical description, 5 foot 7 inches tall, weight 145 pounds, 62 years old. Pulse 88, respiration 17, and temperature, 99.6.

National Archives, sworn testimony, Jacob Stout and W. K. Rhonemus, Excello, OH, 5 Jan. 1892. Increase rejected.

National Archives, board of review, claim validated by Mrs. Maud Clifford of Hamilton, OH.

National Archives, Act of February 6 1907, increase to $20 a month, 28 Feb., 1907. William lived at 1123 Heaton Steet, Hamilton, OH. He alleged he was born 19 Dec., 1830, 1 year earlier than his birth records show.

National Archives, Act of May 11 1912, William lived at 912 North D. Street, Hamilton, Butler Co., OH, received rate of $30 per month, beginning June 1, 1912.

William Maynard died 1920 in Hamilton, Butler Co., OH and was buried in his son-in-law's plot with his daughter, Alice Davis, and his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Gladwish. A stone was requested and has been erected by the federal government, noting his civil war record.
