James Maynard, son of Rev. William and Sarah Kemp Maynard, was born in 1833 in Kent, England. He enlisted in the American Civil War and died on a hospital ship on the Mississippi River between MS and LA in 1863. I have his widow's pension application. She was Elizabeth Seldon Crouch and they were married in England. They had no children. These are my notes abstracted from her application for widow's pension. Quote: James Maynard served in the Civil War in Co. G., 83rd Infantry Volunteers. He died on the hospital ship "Memphis" between Vicksburg, MS and LA. National Archives, Adjutant General Office, widow's application. Eliza Maynard, of Ripley Co., IN applied for a widow's pension based on her husband's death March 25, 1863. Stated James had enrolled 14 Aug., 1862 at Sunman, Ripley Co., IN. National Archives, Surgeon General's Office, Record and Pension Division, 22 June, 1867. Notification of James's death at Floating Hospital, Nashville. Cause of death, bronchitis. National Archives, Adjutant General's Office. Notification 4 June, 1867. Place of death was actually the hospital ship "Nashville" on the Mississippi River and he died of disease. National Archives, Widow's Application for Pension. Stated married in Bodiam, England. Bodiam Parish marriage records were found and her marriage to James was photocopied. Widow was never able to furnish proof and was denied pension. National Archives, letter from post master C. W. Robertson, Guildfield, IN, stated "last had correspondence with Eliza S. Maynard...some 8 or 10 years ago who then was married to a man by the name of Sands, and was living at Wynona P.O. Minn." National Archives, letter sent to Wynona, Minn. came back with inscription that no one by that name had ever lived there. Unquote The widow Eliza married the widower, Joseph H. Sands, and was found with him on the 1880 Whitewater, Winona Co., Minn. census. He was found in 1870 with his previous wife and their children. James's grave registration was not found at Vicksburg Cemetery in 1999 AD. Shirley Maynard Hampton, VA Notify Administrator about this message?
