While researching I have came across information that is stated as fact that puzzles me. I have trouble with believing it to be true. Elizabeth Maynard, daughter of Gibson Maynard, Sr., married John Cates, son of Charles Cates. John Cates and Elizabeth Maynard had a son, Isaac Cates. Isaac Cates married Susannah Maynard. Susannah is being stated to be daughter of Gibson Maynard, Sr. the same as Elizabeth. Isaac surely would not of married his mother's younger sister. I can't see this even as a possibilty. Years ago while researching I came across a note on a website that I have not been able to find since. It stated that Gibson Maynard had taken in and adopted an Indian girl as his own. If this was true, I would then understand Isaac marrying his mother's adopted sister. There has been oral history passed down in the family that one of the grandmothers was half Cherokee, if this was Susannah all would be explained. If this is not true then the Susannah that married Isaac must not be the daughter of Gibson Maynard, Sr.. Notify Administrator about this message?
