There were two men called "Sir John Maynard", possibly brothers:- 1592-1658 a lawyer, a courtier, a Royalist but Presbyterian, and raised troops in Surrey for Parliament in 1642: M.P. for Lostwithiel, Cornwall, 1647; constantly in and out of favour at Westminster 1647-8 (including being committed to the Tower). 1602-1690 a barrister; M.P. for Totnes, Cornwall, around 1640; active in the Parliamentary cause, but protested against the Kings deposition, 1648; Serjeant-at-law, 1654; imprisoned for regarding Cromwell as a usurper, 1655; Solicitor-General on Richard Cromwell's accession; King's Serjeant [at law] and knighted, 1660; appeared for the prosecution at most of the post-Restoration prosecutions and most of the Popish Plot prosecutions; M.P. for Plymouth, 1689; Lord Commissioner for the Great Seal, 1689; left such an obscure will that a private Act of parliament had to be obtained to settle the consequent disputes; his legal manuscript collections are preserved in Lincoln's Inn Library. 1600-1665 A divine; B.A. Queen's College, Oxon., 1620; M.A. Magdalen Hall, 1622; incumbent of Mayfield, 1624; became a Puritan; chosen one of the Westminster Assembly; preached before the Long Parliament, 1644, 1646 and 1648; Sussex Commissioner "for ejecting scandalous ministers and schoolmasters, 1654; ejected, 1662; published sermons.
