Maynard UK history
The following is from THE GENEAOLGISTS' MAGAZINE, volume 6, #12, of December 1934.The publication was the, "Official organ of the Society of Genealogists."
"The Maynard pedigree is full of problems for the genealogist. No side charts connect its beginnings with the famous houses of English history.A vague reference suggests that the earliest member of the family in England was sub-tenant of Roger of Poitou, younger son of the Conqueror's contemporary, Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury.
Later, a less shadowy record brings, 'John Mainard knight,'called "valettus noster," by Edward III, into view.He received the wardenship of Brest Castle in 1352; and six years later was granted a letter of protection when going to Normandy with Sir John de la Warre.
In 1360 he and William de Corby were called upon to provide ten vessels for the passage of Thomas de Holand, Earl of Kent, to France, as the latter was King's Lieutenant and Captain in France and Normandy.
This man, described as, "John Mainard of Axminster, servant of the Black Prince, " appears in a Maynard pedigree preserved in the British Museum (Add. MS. 19141).....................
