Mayhugh genealogy

I had a Great Grandfather named Oscar. He lived in Clermont County Ohio. I don't know when he was born but he died sometime after 1956. My Grandfather was Clyde born in 1908. There were several John Mayhugh's in the family. Of note was a John Mayhew who purchased land in Prince Georges county Virginia. When a portion of the property was sold the name was recorded as Mayhugh. I beleive this occurred around the time of the revolution. I have also heard that the spelling of the name was changed as a result of an argument between brothers. I don't know if there is any truth to that. Anyway, many of these Mayhugh's settled in Maysville Kentucky and Clermont County Ohio. There are a number of them still there. In Maysvile they were a prominent local family. I hope this helps. Another branch of the family may be the McHugh's. This would have been the Scottish version of the name. It was common to change spelling in a name to Americanise the family. I only know of one person who followed the family tree to John in the 1700's and that was Dorothy or Deloris daughter of Bryan who lived in Brown County Ohio. She died many years ago. Good Luck!
