These are the notes that we have on William Cornelius Mayhugh.
We have that he was born in Person Co, NC 29 May 1793 and died in Butler Co, KY 16 Jul 1867.The Person County info could be wrong. He married Lucy Eppes Wells (2 May 1798-17 Jul 1887).She was born in Dinwiddie Co, VA.
Their children are:
Francis (Frank) Mayhugh
Joel Mayhugh
Sarah (Sallie) Mayhugh
James Mayhugh
John Mayhugh
Mary E. Mayhugh
Benjamin Thomas Mayhugh
Emily F. Mayhugh
This family came to KY by covered wagon around 1843.The family walked the journey because their wagons were loaded with supplies and household necessities. They herded their cattle right along with them. This was means for their main food for winter.William settled land on Big Muddy River near Provo,KY in Butler Co,KY.
Of his early boyhood we know but little. At the outbreak of the War of 1812, he was in the employ of his father, driving a four horse team hauling paper from the lowlands where it was unloaded from boats or ships to the inland towns.
He was drafted into service and his load of paper placed in an old vacant house along the road. The wagon and team with him as driver were used for the remainder of the war in hauling military supplies. At the time for mustering out of service his wagon and team were dead or lost, leaving him on foot.Starting home he chanced to stop at a tavern or road house on what was Cox's Road for a night. This tavern was owned and conducted by Joel Wells. It was here that William C.Mayhugh met Lucy Eppes Wells, daughter of Joel Wells. He remained here for a time and he and Lucy E. Wells were married 1815.She was born in 1798.They lived there until about 1823-24 when they migrated to NC.
They remained in NC until the yearof 1843 when they loaded the bare necessities of life into a two horse wagon and set out for KY, where they had already been preceded by one son, Joel and two of his sisters. They settled in Butler Co,KY.Later in life Wm.Cornelius Mayhugh received a land warrant from the government for his military services.
