I find this all very interesting.I am looking for information on my "Mayes" family. My ancestor is Mariah Mayes/Maze from Virginia born about 1810-1815.Many people have her listed under a James Maze and Charity Stout, however I'm not totally convinced it is the same Mariah, if there even was a Mariah for James Maze and Charity Stout (as I don't know for sure.)My information says that Mariah Mayes married William Boggs of Greenbrier County and that Mariah's parents were from England and died early in life, leaving Mariah age 12 and brother James age 6, who were brought up in the home of John Boggs (William's father).Mariah married William at the age of 15.James became a doctor and later settled at Logan Ohio. Also have information that Mariah had an Aunt named Jane Mayes/Maze who married Henry Depue.
I see the listing here for "Big John" - I do not have any mention of him but I have seen a listing for "Big Jim" and some people have "Big Jim" as James Maze (who is married to Charity Stout).I am not sure any of it is correct. To further complicate things, I do know that there was a "Big Jim" who ran the William Boggs Plantation who was a slave. As well as a slave of John Boggs named Mariah.I really think any of these could be a possibility as no one I have seen really has proof of anything.Anyone's help, info, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)
