In 1781 at Jefferson Co. KY Court Minutes Matthew Mayes Sr. was given 400 a of land in Nelson Co. KY. Matthew Mayes is on the 1787 Nelson Co. TX List; 1795 Green Co. TX List and is found on Green Co. Court Records until about 1810. Matthew Mayes Sr. probably died betw. 1800-1810 in Green Co. KY. On the 1787 Nelson Co. KY/VA Tax List Matthew Mayes Sr. is over 50 yrs. and was probably born abt. 1739.

Matthew Mayes Sr. had proven Children: Rebecca Mayes married James Skaggs Nelson Co. KY (died in KY); Letitia Mayes married John Griggs Jr. 18 Mar 1790 Nelson Co. KY; Nancy Mayes married Jeremiah Skaggs Nelson Co. KY (died in KY); Matthew Mayes Jr. married Polly Galloway 31 Mar 1796 Green Co. KY; John Mayes married Elizabeth Griggs 21 Mar 1797 Green Co. KY.

John Griggs Sr. is first found on the 1788 Nelson Co. KY Tx List; 1795 Green Co. KY Tx List; and is found on Green Co. Court Records until abt. 1810. John Griggs Sr. probably dies betw. 1800-1810 in Green Co. KY.

John Griggs Sr. had proven Children: John Griggs Jr. married Letitia Mayes 18 Mar 1790 Nelson Co. KY; Joseph Griggs married Sarah Wilson 18 Jan 1794 Green Co. Ky (Joseph dies by 1820 Nelson Co. KY); Squire Griggs married Mary Ann Bates 1 Dec 1795 Green Co. KY; Elizabeth Griggs married John Mayes 21 Mar 1797; Thomas Griggs married Margaret Bodkins 1 Feb 1799 (Thomas Griggs probably died abt. 1819 Hickman Co. TN); Daniel B. Griggs married Elizabeth McCandless 17 Dec 1802 Baren Co. KY (Daniel Griggs died aft. 1820 Barren Co. KY).

Squire Griggs son of John Griggs Sr. married Mary Ann Bates on 1 Dec 1795 in Green Co. KY. Squire Griggs and his family are found on Crawford Co. AR Tax Lists from 1828 to 1836. On the 1830 Crawford Co. AR Census in Upper Township Squire Griggs is betw. 50-60 years. Squire Griggs left a Will dated 1837 in Pope Co. AR.

John Griggs Jr. son of John Griggs Sr. married Letitia Mayes 18 Mar 1790 in Nelson Co. KY. John Griggs lived in Hickman Co. TN; Wayne Co. TN; Independence Co. AR and Van Buren Co. AR. He died aft. 1840 in Van Buren Co. AR. He was betw. 60-70 yrs. on the 1840 AR Census.

Elizabeth Griggs daughter of John Griggs Sr. married John Mayes 21 Mar 1797 in Green Co. KY.

Matthew Mayes Jr. son of Matthew Mayes Sr. married Polly Galloway on 31 Mar 1796 in Green Co. KY. On the 1830 Crawford Co. AR there is a Matthew Mayes Sr. betw. 50-60 years old. In Crawford Co. Matthew Mayes Jr. in Green Co. KY in 1796 would be considered Matthew Mayes Sr. since his father is dead and he is the oldest Matthew Mayes in Crawford Co. AR in 1830. The Matthew Mayes Sr. in Crawford Co. AR would be about the same age as the Squire Griggs in Crawford Co. AR.

My ancestors are Matthew Mayes Sr. and John Griggs Sr. through their children John Griggs Jr. & Letitia Mayes.
