JOSHUA MAYES d. 1808 in Greensville Co., VA
I am seeking descendants of JOSHUA MAYES who d. in Greensville County, VA in 1808. There is strong circumstantial evidence that he was a brother of MATTHEW MAYES (ca. 1760-1796) -- my ancestor -- who owned an adjoining tract of land on the south side of the Meherrin River in Greensville County, VA, west of Emporia. Their father was DRURY MAYES, b. 1727/8 (Bristol County Parish Register); Drury's father was MATTHEW (ca. 1686-1763).
Genealogical DNA testing is now underway for about a dozen MAYS/MAYES men who have long been identified (varying degrees of proof) to belong to the Southside Mays/Mayes family that settled in Prince George County (Charles City County/Southside prior to 1702), VA ca. 1640-50. Results already received strongly support the traditional paper genealogies to a remarkable degree.
