The James MAYS that was a significant slave holder in Greenville County South Carolina in 1860 was born in Surry England in 1780. He is not related to the MAYES families of Spartanburg and Union Counties who were of Scotch Irish descent and having immigrated to Pennsylvania from the north of Ireland in the 1720s.

Some members of this MAYES family who migrated from Pennsylvania to South Carolina in the 1760s were minor slave holders as were some of their descends who subsequently migrated to Georgia and Alabama (as witnessed by wills and slave schedules)
