My Pittsburgh/Kentucky family did the same thing. It went from Myers to Mayer to Myers and then back to Mayer. So some of the line use the name Mayer and some use the name Myers.

For sure they are here in Pittsburgh in 1793 and some records say they were here as early as 1740's when William Franklin signed the Logstown Treaty. William Franklin was Benjamin Franklin's son. The Franklins were close friends with William Cooper the Mayor of Albany and his son James Fenimore Cooper. James's friend Ned Myers like William Franklin was from Philadelphia.

Ned Myers father lived at St Johns Canada and served in the Navy on the British side in the War of 1812. Ned Myers and James Fenimore Cooper served together in the US Navy in the War of 1812. James Fenimore Cooper wrote a story about Ned Myers. Part of the story is about the action Ned Myers had seen against his father's British ship on the Great Lakes.
