A biography/family history of Jacob A. Mayer is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, page 700. Jacob was born, 1 Jul 1875, third of seven children of John A. and Johanna Mayer, both born in Germany. In 1868, John A. Mayer ran away from his native land to escape the obligatory military service. He stowed away on a sailing vessel and was not discovered for six days. Johanna had some to the US on a steam ship the year before and settled in Delano, MN, where John and she met and were married. After coming to Delano, John A. Mayer was employed in construction work for the St. Paul and Pacific Railway, and later in construction for the Great Northern Railway, rising in 1888 to be superintendent of construction at Great Falls, MT. Later he was made superintendent of the Montana division of this road in Havre, MT. John A. Mayer died 14 Nov 1900. Jacob attended schools of Delano, MN, and Great Falls, MT, and graduated from the Minneapolis Business College in 1891. Following this he was a stenographer in his father's office in Great Falls and Havre, later became a telegrapher for the Great Northern Railroad stationed at various points along the road. He became a brakeman, was promoted to be freight conductor and later passenger conductor, and then was made train dispatcher. He was promoted to chief dispatcher at Havre, from there sent to Grand Forks, ND, as trainmaster, and he subsequently held that position at Havre, MT. On 31 Mar 1914, President Wilson appointed Jacob as United States Land Receiver. On 20 Jan 1903, Jacob married Anna Pogebra, born at Montrose, MN. Mayer children: Mark, John, Robert, James Wilson.
