There are census that were taken every 10 years, starting with 1790. There is not so much information from the earlier census records until 1850 - then the information gets better after 1870. 1890 census was burned and very little amounts are left of that census.

I suggest that you get a membership in ancestry.com. Also, you should look at www.familysearch.org. Rufus is in there. Be careful of the information you find on familysearch and always double check with sources. But, at the very least it can give great clues. Also there is familysearch pilot which can give some good primary information if your state is there during the time frame you need. Footnote is a pretty good source too, that is also a membership site. I find ancestry.com to have more information than footnote and it is easier for me to use.

You should also try rootsweb which has a search for information (again, be careful as this information is only as good as the research behind it). Rootsweb also has posting boards which are great to throw some information out there - you may have cousins who are researching the same lines. And Genweb is great too for couty information. For instance - just do a google search for Madison Co NY genweb. You may find such primary records as marriages, births, deaths - or wills, etc.

Lastly I would also suggest doing a google search for your ancestor with quotes around his or her name. If it is an uncommon name you may come up with a few hits. If the name is common you may want to include the location in your search.

Hoping this is of help to you, happy to help you more if you need it. Trish Elliott-Kashima, Lawrenceburg TN
