how do I get started?

So this is the first attempt at tracing my family history. I have no clue how to go about it and any help would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for my grandfather's family tree.
He is Charles Augustus May,(named after Lt. Colonel May) born in New York state in 1919. I know this is not a lot to go on but it is all I have to start with. I believe his father was Rufus May.
I know I know this is not enough to go on but if anyone can at least tell me the best steps to get started that would be great!
