BADLY HURT IN RUNAWAY

Thomas May, Aged 60, Dragged and Perhaps Fatally Injured

Thomas May, aged 60 years, and who makes his home with James F. Kennedy at 348 Wasco street, was seriously, if not fatally injured in a runaway accident about 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon. He was driving a spirited horse attached to a light sulky down Third street, when the animal became frightened at a passing automobile, and May got out of the rig to quiet the animal. Just as he was climbing into the sulky, the auto driver gave a blast of his horn and the horse took fright again, and leaping forward threw May to the ground. One of his legs became entangled in the harness and he was dragged down Third street, helpless to assist himself.
Many bystanders saw the wildly fleeing horse with the unfortunate driver dragging behind, and made futile efforts to stop the frightened animal, but until the runaway had traveled across the Steel bridge and reached Holladay and Crosby streets all were unsuccessful. At this point the horse was nearly tired out from dragging the man, and the capture was made easily. May was picked up in an unconscious condition and hurried to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where it was ascertained that he was seriously injured. The extent of his injuries will not be known for several days, providing he survives that long, for his body is a mass of bruises and cuts, and he may be injured internally.
He has a wife and two children sojourning in California, and an effort is being made to reach them by telegraph.

****************

In a later newspaper article Thomas May did die from his injuries on June 8, 1908. The undertaking business of Dunning, McEntee & Gilbaugh handled the arrangements. It was stated that Thomas May was a veteran horse trainer. He is buried in the Lone Fir Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
