I was glancing through the book "The Tyson and May Genealogy of Pitt County, NC" and I was looking at the very beginning where it describes a John May who was born in Scotland around 1700. So I decided to do a quick search and found a couple prospects through a Scotland genealogy website that I have a subscription to. Apparently, there were multiple John Mays that were born in Scotland between 1690 and 1720 (7 to be exact).

Anyways, I've compiled the results into a spreadsheet. It shows the parents of each one and where he was born. If anyone is interested, you can send me an email and I'll forward it to you.
