We are descendants of James Maxwell who was born about 1782, maybe in Ireland, maybe in Philadelphia, married Susan Britton Fleeson, daughter of Thomas Fleeson and Rebecca Britton. They had two children that I have identified: James Maxwell, Jr., b. abt 1820; and Emily Maxwell (m. Frederick W. Prescott).
James Maxwell, Sr., was a printer in Philadelphia and Louisville, and published an early edition of Audubon's Birds, among many other books, etc.
James Maxwell, Jr. (b. 1820) m. Mary Ann Beckwith in Louisville, and they had Caroline Beckwith Maxwell, Henry Maxwell, and Grace Maxwell.James died 'at sea' at age 28, in 1848.He was also a publisher.
Various sources keep leading me back to the family of Hugh Maxwell and Katherine (Elizabeth?) Bingham of Ireland, although I haven't found more than anecdotal evidence for this. I wonder if my James Maxwell may have been the James who was a younger brother of the Hugh Maxwell of Philadelphia who was a publisher and important political figure in his time.
Several factors, including the Philadelphia locale, the publishing profession, in particular lead me to believe this could be the correct family.Further, I am intrigued by the fact that James Maxwell was in business with Thomas Manning, when their son, James Jr., married Mary Ann Beckwith, the granddaughter of Evace Manning.(Evace Manning was the daughter of John and Martha Manning of Dutchess County, New York, so no known connection).
Any suggestions?Thank you in advance for any clues!
