Jerry Maxwell 12/21/10
Yes, Thomas was in Indian Territory before 1900 for sure.SOME of his siblings went to OK as well, including the youngest brother, A. M. (mostly went by Manuel--can't recall offhand what the "A" stood for--I have always assumed the "A" in Thomas' name stood for Abraham from his father, but I don't have proof.
John H. Maxwell had 4 children by wife #1, two who never married. He had NO children by wife #3 or #4, who were widows:Mrs. Pamelia Sullens Cornelius and Mrs. Catherine Kilburn, who outlived him.Members of the Maxwell family married some of the children of Pamelia by her first husband, including the ELVIRA you named (m. Wm. Cornelius and had son, John WM., who also came to Llano Co. with Maxwells and Marrs)Elvira died VERY YOUNG, and is listed on the 1870 Mortality Schedule for Yell Co. AR, still in her teens.William, her brother, lived to adulthood per the census records, but has been LOST ever since.Nathan (Nathaniel H. Maxwell----there are several with this name in the family) was killed in the Civil War, in Tennessee, I think. He was shot by a sniper and carried by a friend also from Yell Co. AR until he died. Friend was James Carter JIM Garrett, who came to Llano Co. at end of the Civil War.Whereabouts of his other children by #2 are not known.I believe youngest was a girl named Jane, shown on 1850 Census in Yell Co.....will have to recheck.
I have heard from other researchers about Thomas as a sheriff in OK, and records do verify that. They also verify his death, but not related to his job.IN other words, not a "killed in the line of duty" thing.
