James Maxwell, 3rd of Barncleugh, Irongray, was the son of John Maxwell 2nd of Barncleugh, Irongray, and Margaret Irving. [1] He was a descendant of the Maxwells of Caelaverock.
m1. Janet Carruthers;
m2. Mary Wellwood, the eldest daughter of Dr James Welwood, member of the College of Physicians in London and physician to the Royal Family of William III of Orange and Mary II.[2].
James Maxwell feu of the lands of Glensalloch and Auchinnies (Auchtines).[1]He later held the lands of Barncleugh and was styled also as James Maxwell of Barncleugh, Irongray.[2]He was the half 5th cousin three times removed of Queen Mary II.
James Maxwell's son and heir by Janet Carruthers was James Maxwell, (4th ) of Barncleuch, who died circa 1776, without issue and was succeeded, in 1776, by Dr Wellwood Johnstone, his half nephew by his father's second marriage, on condition that Wellwood Johnstone changed his name to 'Maxwell'.Thus the grandson of James Maxwell, 3rd of Barncleugh, Irongray, and of Mary Welwood became Wellwood (Johnston) Maxwell of Barncleugh. Like his great grandfather and namesake, Dr James Welwood, he became a notable physician.
