I have only scanty information on the Maxwells of early Mecklenburg County. Land records seem to indicate there were two families there in the 1780's; that of James & Elizabeth Maxwell, and that of Robert & Mary Maxwell.
Robert & Mary's land was on the upper part of Steel Creek which is just east of Catawba River near the South Carolina line. Robert died in 1785 leaving a will in which he named his wife Mary and children Robert, John, Margaret, Mary, Susannah, James, William and "youngest daughter expected to be called Jane." However it appears that William was probably much younger than your William.
James & Elizabeth's land was on Reedy Creek possibly near the present boundary between Cabarrus County and Mecklenburg County. I have not seen any probate record for James or Elizabeth. Since Cabarrus County was created in 1792 from Mecklenburg County, there may be records of James & Elizabeth in Cabarrus.
