James Monroe Maxwell & Mahalia Huie, VBC Arkansas
I am trying to trace my grandfather's siblings and their families. The family scattered due to the early death of my great grandparents and the information that I've been able to put together is a little sketchy.I would appreciate hearing from anyone connected to this family or who has any additional information.
I have quite a bit going backwards from my great grandparents, but not much yet on their children.
His parents, my great grandparents, were James Monroe Maxwell (b. 1850 in NC) and Mahalia Huie Maxwell (b. 1852).James (sometimes called Bud) and Mahalia were married in Van Buren County Arkansas August 1, 1869.James' parents were Abner Maxwell and Nancy Viola Treadway Maxwell who migrated from Henderson Co., NC to VBC near Choctaw.Mahalia's father was Dr. Elisha Huie and her mother was Elizabeth, probably Elizabeth Leonard.
My great grandparents lived in VBC until their deaths but part of their farm during the late 1880s and early 1890s may have been in Cleburne County - near what is now Fairfield Bay off of Hwy. 16.They both died between 1895 and 1899 of unknown causes.
I know they had the following eight children but would not be terribly surprised to find out that there were one or two more:
Jesse Maxwell, shown on the 1880 VBC Census as born about 1870.I have no further information but think that a Jesse Maxwell shown in Dry Creek Township of Carroll County Arkansas in 1910 is probably him.
Elizabeth Maxwell shown on the 1880 VBC Census as born about 1873.I am almost certain that she married a George Sullivan (b. about 1861) in VBC December 24, 1889, (marriage record) but I haven't been able to completely confirm that it is the same Elizabeth or find any record of them subsequently.
Madison A. Maxwell born about 1876.Called Matt by some family members, he married Sarah Ayers on July 23, 1896, in Van Buren County.Madison and Sarah moved first to Pope County Arkansas and later (before 1930) to Blue Cane Township, Clay County Arkansas. They had (at least) eight daughters and two sons: Arley, Ethel, Bessie, Augusta, Floyd, a girl whose first initial was M., Mildred, Leona, Wilma, and Jewell Deene. Two of the daughters reportedly ran a flower shop as adults.
Nancy Maxwell born about 1879.I have no record of her after the 1880 census but my father remembers an Aunt Nancy in the mid 1930s so I am assuming that she lived on and married.
Susan Maxwell born May 1883.In 1900 she was living in the home of Alvinia Brown the mother of her Uncle Abner Maxwell's wife, Lucy Brown Maxwell.I have been unable to find any record of her after that.I have some information, however, that she was alive as late as 1940 and married.
Nell Maxwell born May 23, 1888.After her parents' death, she lived with James P. and Susan Fortner Gannon for a time.Nell then married Henry B. Needham and had two sons Rev. Wendell Needham and Lendell Needham.
William Thomas Maxwell (called W.T., Willie and Will at various times in his life) born October 11, 1889.This is my grandfather. He lived with the Rev. J. B. Fortner and his wife briefly after his parents died and then with the family of Owen Bowman. He married Cora Mae Martin about 1915 and they had six sons and a daughter; Denver D., Opie Denton ("Scootcher" as a youth), Quenton, Lenton, William Fenton, Bernell (died at age 5) and Doyne J.
Lonnie M. Maxwell born April 1894 (date uncertain but definitely between 1890 and 1894.After his parents' death, Lonnie lived first with his Aunt Falba Catherine Maxwell and her husband, David Nelson, and then with the family of Charles T. Rainwater and his wife Alta Hunter Rainwater.Alta Hunter Rainwater was Lonnie's cousin, the daughter of Mary J. Maxwell and James Hunter. My father remembers visiting his Uncle Lonnie, his wife and "several" children, several times between 1930 and the 1950s in the Pine Bluff area but tried to find the family later and was unable to.I haven't been able to verify a record after the move from VBC but think that Lonnie and Eva Maxwell with family shown in the 1930 Census in Jefferson County, Arkansas is Uncle Lonnie's family.
If you know anything about this family, I would be delighted to hear from you here or by email.
Pam
