Hello, Kevin in New Zealand. I am descended from James Maxwell (dob1697)brother of Audley. Their father, James, m Patty Audley @1695 either in Boston, Pa. or Scotland or Ireland ???....Family tradition says this branch was from Dumfries, however one or two generations may have been in northern Ireland before coming to America. There hasbeen mention of a William who was in Bristol Eng. and Barbados before coming to New England. William might have been the father of our James who married Patty A. James had a brother, Audley, mentioned by F. Cottrell in another response to your query. I mention the Scotch/Irish connection because the family plantations in Georgia (circa 1748) had names...Belfast,Limmerick, Kilkenny. With your access to British records, you might have better luck than we have in finding the link back to Dumfries. If anyone reads this who KNOWS who the parents of James Maxwell who married Patty Audley were, and when they or their parents came to America, there are a lot of us who would like to know. I have made several trips to Scotland and Ireland, visited Carelaverock and Scottish descendants there in Dumfries and New Abbey and Maxwelton House...no luck in almost 20 years. Also, two now deceased family members in Florida spent years between 1950-1980 trying to piece it together.I picked up the challenge about 1981 and while I have amassed a great deal of family genealogy information, nothing has proven the link to Scotland or Ireland.Hoping for a breakthrough!
