Celebrating a Remarkable Life
Hazel M. Borgnis, widow of Thomas George Borgnis, having moved to Daytona
Beach, Florida from Westerville, Ohio five years ago, expired from breast
cancer
on June 5, 2003.Born Hazel Frances Maxon, daughter of Frances Ida Chute and
Walter Harold Maxon, on January 1, 1933, in Franklin County, Columbus, Ohio,
she lived her 70 years in both familiar and exotic locations including St.
Croix, Toronto, Alaska, New Orleans, Tampa, New Jersey, California, Haiti, San
Juan, Alabama, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.She was chosen to be
a stewardess with
Howard Hughes' TransWorld Airlines in the 1950's and worked in business,
television commercials, and real estate during the 1960's.
Her subsequent careers
included bookkeeping and accounting, but she is best known for her latest
work in the field of genealogical research.Notably, she is responsible for
groundbreaking finds in the family history stemming
from the Reverend John Maxson,
the first white child born in the colony of Rhode Island.Her other
interests included trivia and word games,
as well as competitive level Bridge as a
Regional Master in the American
Contract Bridge League.She was a member of the
American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 361, as well as a member of the Ladies
Auxiliary of the Fraternal
Order of Eagles, Aerie 4401. Treasured for her warm heart,
quick wit, and zest for living, she will be missed by all who knew her.She
is survived by her son Michael Alan Burroughs, her daughter-in-law Kathryn
Barnes-Burroughs, and her grandson John Phillip Burroughs, as well as by two
sisters, Barbara Gonzales and Edith Heise, and one brother, Jim Dornoff, along
with cherished
nieces Diane Toombs, Elena Langstaff and nephew Douglas Beavers.
