I have long wondered whether the Moats family might be an anglicized derivative of the German Maus family name. It is perhaps not coincidental that the first Moats, Jacob, appears in Pendleton County, VA, b. 1745, d. 1820 in Pendleton Co. Moatsville is just a few miles south and east of Mouth of Seneca. Do you have in your data any suggestion of a linkage between Maus and Moats? Thanks. Chris
