The MAURER family I referred to who lived in Franklin County, Ohio were from Keskastel, Bas-Rhin,France. Keskastel is in the area which prior to 1793 had belonged to the counts of Nassau, and until 1745 had been part of Nassau-Saarwerden. In 1745 the villages in Saarwerden were divided betwee two separate branches of the Nassau noble family. This area was at that time surrounded by Elsass and Lothringen which became known as Alsace and Lorraine when gained by France. In 1871 when the Prussians took this area they referred to it as Unter-Elsass and combined with part of Lorraine thus it was known as Elsass-Lothringen. However, the Maurer family did come from Switzerland to that region so it is a great possibility that your MAURER family would have been related to the family I wrote about.
