I was questioning the big gap in the dates. It took me a while to find it online because I thought that Sherburne had killed Philip Barton Key.Philip Barton Key was killed by a Mr. Stickles in another duel. When I searched for "Sherburne and Daniel Key duel", I found the article. The duel occurred at the Bladensburg, MD dueling grounds in 1836, and the letter from Mattingly was written from Florence, AL in 1859, not 1869.As I understand the situation, when Philip Barton Key was killed, it set off a rehashing of the earlier duel in which Daniel Key was killed, and Thomas Mattingly was writing to set the record straight regarding the circumstances leading up to and at the time of that duel.Thank you for posting your information here, it helps to track down even more pieces of the Mattingly puzzles.
