Laura, I still haven't discovered much on James William.I have found a James William Mattingly who registered for the World War I draft at Nelson County, Kentucky on 9-12-1918 and gave his full name, date of birth as 3-27-1898.He also said he was a farmer and named Regina Mattingly as a next of kin. Can't tell what her relationship was at this point but I suspect his mother. He said he was of medium height and slender built with blue eyes and dark hair.
The 1920 census shows him as William Mattingly, aged 23 and his wife as Geneva, aged 25.The couple were living with Genava's parents; George (age 54) and Nora L. (age 51) White.During 1920 James W. is listed as an engraver and in 1930 as a watch maker; both times in a jewelry store.
Maybe we can find more.Does the draft registration sound like your father?
William Mattingly
