I feel absolutely positive that your line and Don's and mine are related but how to prove it is the question.Your Henry Mattingly was a descendant of Jeremiah Mattingly who first "apparently" settled in Union County, Kentucky.Just where Jeremiah fits within the line of Mattingly's has continued to escape us for years.Trying to find the connection is likely beyond the scope of my abilities and resources at my disposal but there are many better researchers than I who I hope will one day find that connection. At least one researcher believes Jeremiah was a son of Luke/Lucius Mattingly and Elizabeth Thompson and a brother to the Barton Mattingly we find in Perry County, Indiana. We do know that several of Jeremiah's descendants settled over in that part of Indiana at a later date.If this is true then Henry was a descendant of Cezar Mattingly, born about 1661 and the "presumed" youngest son of Thomas and Elizabeth Mattingly. The other son, as you know, was Thomas Mattingly, II.
I'm no expert on Don Mattingly whose full name is Donald Arthur. He had an uncle named Joseph Fabian, 1908 to 2000, who researched at length on their family lines and carried his lineage back to Joseph Mattingly (1760 to 1820) and Hessina Hinton.Joseph Fabian also co-authored and privately published a book titled "The Descendants of Joseph Mattingly and Hessina Hinton".Unfortunately, the book is not widely distributed.I corresponded with Joe a couple of times before his death and he informed me that a copy of the book was on file at the Evansville Library.Henry's known lineage is:
Jeremiah Mattingly (1775 to 10-21-1843) and Sarah Shanks
John L. Mattingly (1801 - 1850) and Sarah Hart
William Thomas (1841 to ?) & Elizabeth Amanda Riggs
Benjamin Herbert (1863 to 1900) & Viola Lacefield
Wilson Henry (1884 to ?) and Mary Ann Nelson
I'll do some work on Mary Ann and see if I can find any additional informaiton on her.
William
