Thank you for your response.
There are several people who state that Horace Preston married Permillia Mattice who was born in 1811. As you well know, when people find a name they assume there was only one "Horace Preston", and that he has to be the one who married Permillia Mattice. My question is, "Where is the documentation?" And you say the "Mattice Family History" by Rex Mattice. Yes, this sounds like a good source. But what if there was another Horace? As names commonly run in families. One that runs in this family is Artymesa/Artimesa/Artimesia/Arimessa/Artimacy. I am sure that these people all named their daughters the same & may have been illiterate, so this is what happened!
If you take the census age groups for my Horace Preston for 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, & 1840, it appears that he was born in about 1777/80. Horace was followed in this family by Phineas, born in about 1778, and Zerepta born April 23, 1779, in Torrington, Litchfield County, CT. While half a page was left blank in the Town of Torrington, to list other children born to Junia Preston and Artymesa Marshall, apparently Zerepta was the only one born in Torrington. It is believed that the other seven were born in other townships in Litchfield County, CT, including Horace. All we have for the birth order of their 8 children is a list of names which people list in various orders & try to confirm by black marks on various censuses which don't always add up! Some say that one died and then another finds a marriage for that missing "child"! It is very frustrating!!
Now if you look for a Horace Preston site on Rootsweb-Family Trees, you will find the posting of Lynn Alber who states that Horace's wife was Patty/Permillia Culver. I have seen no documentation to this surname. But I do believe that Horace named a son Reuben and there was a Reuben Culver who lived as a neighbor to Junia Preston in 1800 in Huntington Township, Luzerne County, PA. While it is said that Reuben Culver had 10 children, only the names of six are known (but no "Patty").
More later, MaryLu
