I would appreciate some correspondence with anyone familiar with the following situation: 16 May 1789 Indenture proven by Henry SLAPPY: 7 Jan/Jun/Jul 1788 indenture between Wm WADLINGTON & Wm GILREATH. Wit: Robert RUTHERFORD Esq, Thomas MATTHIS & Henry SLAPPY. Newberry Co, SC. [Bk A p642] (Note: what's his connection? to GILREATH or WADLINGTON?) I have noted a family group sheet on the LDS website and online database that shows one Thomas MATTHIS married to Mary Polly RUTHERFORD. Gen. Griffith RUTHERFORD seems to have been the leader of choice for this GILREATH family: (abt Sep 1775) William LENOIR served as Lt on RUTHERFORD's Cherokee campaign. [p459 DRAPER's KING's Mtn] 1778 When British invaded GA, Gen RUTHERFORD led at least a portion of Col. CLEVELAND's regt Winter campaign of 1778-79, which culminated in the disastrous defeat of Gen ASHE at Brier Creek, bef LINCOLN & RUTHERFORD could come to his aid. [425-462 DRAPER's Kings' Mtn] abt Mar-Nov 1779 RUTHERFORD commissioned William GILREATH as Capt. (probably enroute betwn Black Swamp, SC and Brier Creek, GA?) It's my understanding that at the time, many junior officers were relatives of their leaders. I have also noted the following: 4 Apr 1761 Land grant to Samuel WOODS for 700 acres in Rowan Co, NC, on both sides of Coldwater, joined lands of George TATE, Samuel GALBREATH, Griffith RUTHERFORD & John RUSSELL. Witnesses: John FROHOCK. Examined by John FROHOCK & Will CUMMING. Surveyed 17 Feb 1759. Chain carriers: John COUCHRAN & Andres WOODS. John FROHOCK, Surveyor. Rowan Co, NC. [#4977 HOFMAN's NC Grants, Vol 3] I would appreciate any comments which might help identify the men in the above citation and the location of their community. I have previously posted the following queries: http://genforum.genealogy.com/gilreath/messages/988.html http://genforum.genealogy.com/nance/messages/2014.html I will appreciate any correspondence about MATHIS families and individuals with any of the following surnames: CHAPPELL (or, possibly, CHAPPELLE) CLEVELAND COX DOAK GOLIGHTLY HAMRICK (or, possibly, HAMBRIGHT) HEMBREE JACKSON KERSHAW (or, possibly, CASHARD) LENOIR LINDSEY PETTY POOL RUTHERFORD SLAPPY STROBEL For the most part, these would be in NC or SC; however, there are links to GA, KY, NJ, PA, TN and VA--following the trading routes and established roads. Any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Notify Administrator about this message?
