I have to say that I'm not entirely convinced that Garrett was from Halifax Co.The Richard Mathews who lived in Halifax Co did have a son named William, but that William died in Halifax Co in 1812 so there's no way that William Garrett Mathews can be that Richard's son.
I do admit that it would seem to be a stretch to think that since Garrett's last name was Mathews that he wasn't related to his wife Mary Quarles Mathews since they had the same last name. However, this is a trap that is easily fallen into especially considering that I know of a Mathews-Mathews marriage in Brunswick Co, VA (where the Halifax Co bunch and Mary Quarles Mathews' grandfather had lived prior to moving to Edgefield Co) in which the bride and groom were not related. This marriage involved one of Mary Quarles Mathews' distant cousins. For years I could not imagine that those two were not related, but DNA testing eventually revealed the truth and then later paper evidence was found.
One thing that could prove Garrett's familial relationship to his wife would be a yDNA test on one of his direct male descendants.
