James Matthews paid the tax at Buckingham County in 1783 for John, Thomas and Nan.It was thought initially that the John and Thomas mentioned in this tax list were sons of James, but it is more likely that they were slaves.Others who paid for their sons in the same tax records showed the last names. If only first names were used, (as in this case), then they were slaves. No last names were used for John, Thomas and Nan.
It is doubtful that James Matthews had sons named John and Thomas.
