There were Matthews and Benton families long ago living in a rural area called Coward(s), in present day Florence County South Carolina. Both families came from North Carolina; Matthews before 1790 census, I know nothing about them prior to census.A Benton ancestor, Robert, married a Susannah Brown in the Hillsborough District of NC (area around Raleigh), and they moved into SC about 1795.I think there were others of the surname Brown living in the Coward(s) area in early 1800s.
