Mussendine Matthews
There is a great deal of information on Mussendine Matthews out there in genealogy cyberspace; some true, some contrived, some just plain wrong. What is indeed plain wrong is his purported DOB, 1752.I live in N. Virginia and recently took time out in July to visit Statesville, NC, the library, cemeteries, Ft. Dobbs, etc., about 5 hours from here.Mussendine was definitely buried in the Old Presbyterian Church/Graveyard there [DAR put a new stone there].He was an Elder of that church in 1764--4th Creek Presbyterian. Please look hard at that date, 1764.Now, look at his purported DOB.He may be the only Elder in the history of the Presbyterian Church at the age of 12.I suspect that much of this DOB of 1752 is a contrivance to make him fit someone/somewhere, e.g. parents, siblings, locations, etc. That seems to be the convention in genealogy. But if the glove don't fit, you must acquit.I would hazard a guess that he was born closer to 1740 than 1752.If I am correct about who his father was, that would make his father more virile at the time; 40 to 50 rather than 50 to 60.There is also much conjecture that he was born in Ireland, rather than Virginia most likely, Lunenburg or Brunswick Co.There is also the assertion his parents were Catholic and that is the reason he left Ireland and became a Presbyterian. It also seems that about 10 family lines claim him as theirs. If you are one of those 10 lines, it's time for an audit.Start with the DOB and the hard fact he was an Elder in the 4th Creek Presbyterian Church in 1764.God Bless.
