Barry, As they say, this doesn't compute. The wills of the Archbishop and his wife, Frances Barlow Matthews, make it clear Captain Samuel could not be their son. Their Samuel died at the university in 1601 and was buried near there, unmarried. Their son John never left England, was apparently a spendthrift. The famous Sir Tobie left no known children. Only John left descendants. None are known to have come to Virginia. This linking of Capt. Samuel to the Archbishop might have seemed to fit until contrary documentation was brought forth. If you find any other information on Captain Samuel's parentage, please help me. I have only recently started my own research on this branch of my mother's family and had considerable erroneous information. I appear now to be descended from Capt. Samuel's great-granddaughter Mary (if I calculate right) who married Isaac Matthews, alleged to be a desendant of one John Matthews who arrived in Virginia about the time Capt. Samuel did. The family account has held that Samuel and John were brothers, but I have no proof yet. A researcher had concluded that the two were the sons of the archbishop, now disproved. Capt. Samuel appears to have had some good political connections in England. Stephen Edmondson Notify Administrator about this message?
