Does anyone relate to this Mathews family?
Tuttle's Pioneers of Madison County, New York, p. 158, states: "Mathews, Henry H. W. -Lived in Sullivan. Veteran Rev. War. Served in Captain Babcock's Company Vermont Militia 1781. Died 1809. Wife Thursa sometimes spelled Thressa."
The Madison County Surrogate Court has a probate record (# 46) for "Henry R. W. Matthews" (note discrepancey in the initial R./H.) There is now will. There is a one-page Letters of Administration in Book AX, p. 74.
Henry Mathews (d. 1809 Sullivan, Madison Co., NY) was the son of John & Mary "Polly" (Bell) Mathews. John was b. abt. 1734 in MA; d. 27 Aug. 1807, Sullivan, Madison Co., NY. He who apparently owned land in Bernardston, MA, part of the Hubbard farm, and 250 acres of Calf farm, bought between 1770 and 1780, and finally sold 1791. He was a soldier in Capt. McClellan's company of Minutemen.
"Thirsa" Phillips, of Manlius, shows up in an Onondaga Co. record, dated 21 April 1814. in which she was appointed guardian of Henry H. W. Mathews son of Henry F. W. Mathews of the town of Sullivan, Madison Co., NY (ONONDAGA COUNTY APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIANS, 1803-1815, BOOK #3). Note that the initials for the son in this record are the same as for the adult who is said to have died in 1809 in Tuttle's Pioneers of Madison Co., so there seems to be a slight discrepancy with these middle innitials.
"Thersa" Phillips was enumerated in Clarkson, Monroe Co., NY in the 1830 US Census, p. 264:
1 male 5-10
1 male 10-15
2 males 20-30
1 female 10-15
1 female 15-20
1 female 20-30
1 female 30-40
(While the index reads "Thersa", the original page appears to show "Thirsa" Phillips. If she was born in 1790, she would have been 40 in 1830. I don't know who the other people in the household were. The only other Phillips houshold in Clarkson in 1830 was that of John D. Phillips, p. 272. Also, note that Lyman H. Phillips and Celestia W. Case were married in Clarkson in 1824. Clarkson was created out of Murray Twp. (now Orleans Co.) in 1819; Monroe Co. was created out of Genesee in 1821.)
I could not find this woman in 1840 or 1850 census records (and searched for all spelling variations). The only people named Phillips in Clarkson, Monroe Co., NY in 1840 were Abel Phillips (age 40-50) with a wife and two daughters, and Wilbur Phillips (age 40-50) with a wife, son and daughter. There was an Ira Phillips in nearby Murray Co., Orleans Co. and other people named Phillips in neighboring towns.
"Thurza" Phillips was later enumerated in the 1860 US Census, living in the household of Lyman H. & Celetsia Phillips in Empire Twp., Fond du Lac Co., WI (Roll: 1407, p. 413, enumerated 21 July 1860):
Thurza Phillips, 70 [b. abt. 1790], real estate $1,000, personal property $1,000, b. CT
There is a probate record (# 644) for "Thurza" Phillips in Fond du Lac Co., Wisconsin.
At this point, I speculate (emphasis added) that Thursa Phillips (maiden name unknown) was the widow of Henry F/R. W. Mathews (d. 1809) and the mother of Henry H. W. Mathews (these two's initials seem to be mixed up in the couple places I found them), and afterward apparently married a Phillips--perhaps Elias--and was widowed again by 1830, but remained close to her Phillips in-laws. She apparently had a family, as several younger people were living in her household in 1830. Her estate record in Fond du Lac Co., WI should help determine how she relates.
