My ancestor was John Matthews of Amherst County, VA. He was b. 1763 and m. Mary Ann Bailey, b. 1768.I believe that the Thomas Matthews who d. 1785, in Amherst, was John's father. This is based, in part, on a deed abstract that shows John and Mary Ann Matthews and Elizabeth (Matthews)Becknal sold property to Samuel Scott Scruggs. This was probably land inherited from Thomas, Sr..
The abstract reads as follows:The Deeds of Amherst County, Virginia, 1761-1807 and
Albemarle County, Virginia, 1748-1763 by Bailey Fulton Davis.
“Page 525. 27 Oct 1798.ELIZ. BECKNAL, JNO, MARY, NANCY, & SALLY BECKNAL; JNO. MATTHEWS & wife MARY ANN, AC, to SAML. SCOTT SCRUGGS, AC, for L 120, 236 acres trible fall creek, branch of Rockfish.Lines: JOS. SMITH, RALPH JOPLING dec’d, WM. DIXON. Wit: WM. BAILEY, THOS. NASH, WM. MATTHEWS as to WM. LEE HARRIS.”
Two of the witnesses, William Bailey and Thomas Nash are related to John and Mary Ann.William is the brother of Mary Ann Bailey and Thomas Nash m. Lucy Bailey who is Mary Ann's sister.
Based on family lore, the progenitor of my Matthews line in America is William Matthews and that our heritage is Welsh and Scotch-Irish.I have found a William Matthews who m. Hannah Nevil, dau. of James Nevil.I have not found any record of their children but they lived in Albemarle County.I have found a deed record that shows William sold 100 acres to William Cabell. I also have been told that while in Wales, William Cabell received a letter from his wife which included a request by William Matthews as to the condition of his mother.
I am looking for any connection between William Matthews and Thomas Matthews.
