I greatly appreciate your taking the time to reply to my post! I would love to attend the gathering in Ireland next June but I am a teacher, and that is near the end of our school year--a very bad time to be leaving town, if I wish to retain my employment!

I cannot see a link to any of the names you mention specifically; though I am excited to learn there is a family vault at St. James, Bristol. I will be sure to look that up next time I am there. Certainly the ancestors I am sure of lived in and around Bristol at various times; not that that proves any connection, of course. My great grandfather married twice in Bedminster, for example, and two of his children were born in Bristol.

The Matthews ancestors I know of in England are: William Howard Matthews (grandfather, born 29 Mar 1864, Knighton, Radnorshire)--he was young when the family emigrated to the USA (1870) and all his marriage and descendancy took place in the US.

William Edward Matthews (Great grandfather, born 28 Dec 1810, West Cranmore, Somerset)--he married several times, including Emily Jane Reade (1843) and my great grandmother Elizabeth Frances Blanch of Bath (m 25 Mar 1857). Both my great grandparents died in the USA and are buried in a private cemetery on a family farm in Missouri. There were at least 5 children between the two of them who survived and had descendants (all married and had children in the USA or Canada): Frances Blanch (b 1848); Oscar William (b 1853?); Katherine Eva (b 1856); Compton Sydney (b 1858); and my grandfather William Howard.

All I know of the generation before this is that GGF William Edward's father's name was also William, and that his mother's name was Elizabeth (possibly Hunt; if so, m 1791 in Wootton Bassett, Wilts), and that they were from the Wiltshire/Somerset/Gloucestershire area. I know there were at least two other siblings of my GGF, both girls, a bit older than my great grandfather: Mary (b Wincanton, Som @ 1800, m a John Samuel Penning, schoolmaster), and Matilda Sophia (b Wincanton @ 1802, m a Charles Rabbitts, farmer). Given the dates, I would assume my great-great grandfather William must have been born around 1770.

It does not help, I know, that my ancestors bore such common names, and also married women of such common names. You have some lovely, distinct ones in your lineage.

I want to know more, of course; but I am greatly limited, being confined for the present, to resources available online. Thank you for the references you gave me; I hope that I will be able to gain access to that information.
