Wes,
My husbands Mathews/Matthews left Maury county TN after 1820.It is very likely we share a common line. From an article I have I know Charnel/Charrel(many spellings over the years) and his wife Sarah Shinall(Shinalt/Chenault)had a daughter Mary Ann and a son named William T.before they came to ILL.
I believe Charnel had a brother Elisha that also left with him. They appear on the 1830 Bond county ILL census but by 1840 Charnel had moved to Washington county ILL.
Sarahs parents were Thomas Shinalt/Shinall and Polly Jenkins. The Shinalls, Cups, Reeves, Jones, Jenkins all traveled together.
I know there are Rev. War Matthews buried in Maury county ; David and James and they are buried there as well as a John Matthews. All I have been able to find is that James was born 1739 and died 1812. He married Mary Doak. I can find no connection but there must be one.
Charnel and Sarah were born about 1803 in what was then Maury county VA and later became Maury county TN.
Please keep me in mind if you find anymore. Its so hard to find anything before the 1850 census if you do not have access to historical records.
