Found some interesting information that I had received from my Mother several years ago but had forgot I had it.The source of this information is Hallie Mantle from Linn, MO.Hallie is the gggrandaughter of Sarah Green Matthews, one of Samuel's daughters.Hallie has been researching her geneology for decades and has published much of it in the local newspaper. This is an excerpt from some of that, keeping in mind that Hallie did not know exactly when and where Samuel was born:
"The supposition as to the time of Samuel Matthews' birth, as well as his possible place of birth, is based largely on a reference in the biography of Dr. C.E. Matthews, a well-known Souther Baptist evangelist.Dr. Matthews was the great-grandson of James Alpheus Matthews, one of Samuel Matthews' sons. The biography, What God Hath Wrought Through C.E. Matthews, by C.E.Wilbanks (Grand Rapids, Mich.: Wm B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1957) states on page 10:
-Charley's great-great-grandfather (name not given) was captured by British soldiers in the Revolutionary War.With him two other men were bound and thrown on a brush heap. For some reason it was not burned.Young Matthews escaped, lived among friendly Indians, and married one of their maidens.-
It has not been possible to substantiate the above story from any other source. In the preface to this book, Dr. C.E. Matthews states, "We have a complete history of my ancestors on both my father's and mother's side back to the Revolutionary War."Inquiry of Dr. Matthews' children and others has not revealed the location of this history, if it is still in existence."
It's also interesting that Hallie supposed that Samuel's middle name was Jerome and not James and that his son Samuel was name after him.
